As a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator the question I get asked most often is, what should I buy if I’ve never made a card before? So, I thought I would put down my thoughts on this common question and what better place than here on my blog. Now this list is just my opinion and if you search the internet you can find many other lists. This list is for someone who is new to the craft so is the absolute bare minimum to get started.
7 Supplies to Make Beautiful Cards
White cardstock you want a paper that does not allow the ink to bleed and that does not break when it is folded. Also it needs to be sturdy enough to hold the layers of decorative paper and embellishments that you will want to add to make that card uniquely yours.
Whisper White 8-1/2″ X 11″ Cardstock 100730
The best projects start with the best products. Start your projects with our high-quality cardstock, formulated especially for discerning crafters. The ultrasmooth surface is ideal for stamping, so you get clean, crisp images.
* 40 sheets
* Acid free
* Lignin free
A good quality paper trimmer There are hundreds of trimmers out there. You want one that has accurate measurements and the blade does not shred the paper. Also, one that is reasonably priced. I have been through many trimmers and the Stampin’ Up! trimmer is a really good one. Also it comes with a scoring piece so you are getting two tools in one.
Stampin’ Trimmer 126889
This is the paper trimmer that all other paper trimmers want to be! This lightweight, portable trimmer is specially designed to make stable and straight cuts.
* Full 12″ cut or score
* 1 cutting and 1 scoring blade included
* Extra-wide, 6-1/4″ cutting base for most projects; 14-1/2″ extendable ruler for large projects
* Ruler and grid protected by durable plastic cover
* Point on cutting handle for precise measuring
* Right-side grid for cutting thin strips
* Includes storage compartments for Bone Folders and more
A scoring tool As previously mentioned, the Stampin’ Up! trimmer has a scoring piece. You will need this so your folds are always clean and precise. As your card making advances you will want to invest in a multiangle paper scorer but a good straight score is all you need to start out.
A bone folder Your finger tip will not give you that crisp clean fold that a bone folder will.
Bone Folder 102300
Easily score and make crisp folds on paper and cardstock. Scores, burnishes, and distresses paper.
* 6″ (15.2 cm) long
* Sanded smooth and polished
* Point on one end only
Black ink There are many types of ink out there. And each type has a different purpose. A beginner should go with a waterproof permanent ink. This ink will not bleed when coloring the stamped design with markers or using an aqua pen.
Jet Black Stazon Pad 101406
Permanent ink for stamping images to watercolor. Also for nonporous surfaces like window sheets and cellophane bags. Clean with StazOn Cleaner.
Versatile Stamp Set Your first stamp set should have different sentiments and accent designs. I like Beautiful You. It has a birthday, encouragement and celebration sentiment. This will be your hardest decision. There are a lot of great stamp sets to choose from.
Beautiful You Wood-Mount Stamp Set 143004
Life may not be the party we had hoped for, but while we’re here, we might as well dance. Doesn’t that stamp just say it all? The rest can be expressed by the other stamps in this set. You’ll love the artistic feel of this set–stamp a colorwash image over a silhouette for color, or add your own color with Watercolor Pencils or ink.

Colored pencils I find pencils are easier to color with than markers and now with the blender pen they’re even easier.
