Paper Pumpkin Alternative – February 2017

Posted in Let's Get Creative

It seems these days everyone with a Paper Pumpkin Kit is looking for an alternative to the kit design. I like stretching my creative thoughts too and decided to show you what I came up with.

If you are not familiar with the Paper Pumpkin Card Kit Subscription, Click on the image below for full details.

Last month’s kit, Many Happy Birthdays the pattern paper lent itself well to generic or boy themed cards.  And I know we are always looking for better masculine cards.

In keeping with my 31 Days of Birthday Cards Challenge here are 4 alternative variations using last months kit and a few items from my own stash.

I always look forward to each months new Paper Pumpkin.

The Only 7 Supplies You Need to Make Beautiful Cards

Posted in Tips & Tutorials
on March 29, 2017

As a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator the question I get asked most often is, what should I buy if I’ve never made a card before? So, I thought I would put down my thoughts on this common question and what better place than here on my blog.  Now this list is just my opinion and if you search the internet you can find many other lists.  This list is for someone who is new to the craft so is the absolute bare minimum to get started.

7 Supplies to Make Beautiful Cards

White cardstock you want a paper that does not allow the ink to bleed and that does not break when it is folded.  Also it needs to be sturdy enough to hold the layers of decorative paper and embellishments that you will want to add to make that card uniquely yours.

Whisper White 8-1/2″ X 11″ Cardstock 100730

Price: $9.00

The best projects start with the best products. Start your projects with our high-quality cardstock, formulated especially for discerning crafters. The ultrasmooth surface is ideal for stamping, so you get clean, crisp images.

* 40 sheets

* Acid free

* Lignin free

A good quality paper trimmer  There are hundreds of trimmers out there. You want one that has accurate measurements and the blade does not shred the paper. Also, one that is reasonably priced. I have been through many trimmers and the Stampin’ Up! trimmer is a really good one.  Also it comes with a scoring piece so you are getting two tools in one.

Stampin’ Trimmer 126889

Price: $30.00

This is the paper trimmer that all other paper trimmers want to be! This lightweight, portable trimmer is specially designed to make stable and straight cuts.

* Full 12″ cut or score

* 1 cutting and 1 scoring blade included

* Extra-wide, 6-1/4″ cutting base for most projects; 14-1/2″ extendable ruler for large projects

* Ruler and grid protected by durable plastic cover

* Point on cutting handle for precise measuring

* Right-side grid for cutting thin strips

* Includes storage compartments for Bone Folders and more

A scoring tool As previously mentioned, the Stampin’ Up! trimmer has a scoring piece. You will need this so your folds are always clean and precise.  As your card making advances you will want to invest in a multiangle paper scorer but a good straight score is all you need to start out.

A bone folder Your finger tip will not give you that crisp clean fold that a bone folder will.

Bone Folder       102300

Price: $7.00

Easily score and make crisp folds on paper and cardstock. Scores, burnishes, and distresses paper.

* 6″ (15.2 cm) long

* Sanded smooth and polished

* Point on one end only

Black ink There are many types of ink out there. And each type has a different purpose.  A beginner should go with a waterproof permanent ink.  This ink will not bleed when coloring the stamped design with markers or using an aqua pen.

Jet Black Stazon Pad       101406

Price: $9.00

Permanent ink for stamping images to watercolor. Also for nonporous surfaces like window sheets and cellophane bags. Clean with StazOn Cleaner.

Versatile Stamp Set Your first stamp set should have different sentiments and accent designs. I like Beautiful You. It has a birthday, encouragement and celebration sentiment. This will be your hardest decision. There are a lot of great stamp sets to choose from.

Beautiful You Wood-Mount Stamp Set    143004

Price: $39.00

Life may not be the party we had hoped for, but while we’re here, we might as well dance. Doesn’t that stamp just say it all? The rest can be expressed by the other stamps in this set. You’ll love the artistic feel of this set–stamp a colorwash image over a silhouette for color, or add your own color with Watercolor Pencils or ink.

Our classic wood-mount rubber stamps

* Have deeply etched images so you get a superior stamped impression each time.

* Are precut so you don’t have to trim.

* Come with farmed-maple wood blocks—you don’t need to buy blocks separately.

* Permanently mount on the blocks so they’re ready to go when you are.

* Come packaged in cases with images on the spine for easy storage and quick reference.

Quantity: 13 rubber stamps

Colored pencils I find pencils are easier to color with than markers and now with the blender pen they’re even easier.

Watercolor Pencils          141709

Price: $16.00

High-quality, smooth color pencils. Perfect for watercoloring stamped images. Use with Aqua Painters, Blender Pens, or alone.

* 13 pencils in Stampin’ Up! colors: Basic Black, Basic Gray, Bermuda Bay, Calypso Coral, Daffodil Delight, Early Espresso, Melon Mambo, Old Olive, Pacific Point, Pumpkin Pie, Real Red, Rich Razzleberry, Whisper White

With just these 7 supplies you can make many different and beautiful cards.

After a while you will want to take your card-making up a notch by using colored card-stock, patterned paper and few embellishments.  With all the choices out there this can seem a little daunting. But, Stampin’ Up! has taken the stress out of this process too. They have put together wonderful all-inclusive kits.

Bible Journaling Through Lent: Psalm 145:18

The Lord is Near to All That Call on Him

Today, I’d like to share with you my journaling piece from last week for Bible Journaling Through Lent. I am following Sarah Knepper over at  She has put together a set of verses for us to journal through the Lenten season.

I love this verse.  It reminds me that no matter how difficult life gets Jesus is always there to help. There have been many times in my life where I have tried to do it all on my own and would feel like I was drowning in obligations and responsibilities. But, like Peter when he tried to walk on water by himself and started to drown, I know all I have to do is call out and Jesus will be there.

I hope this inspires you to do some of your own creative art while meditating on God’s word.

Peace and Love,

Oh and you can click Bible Journaling under the title of this post to see my other Bible Journaling devotions from weeks 1 and 2
